Do You Need a Designer for a Whole-Home Remodel in Colorado?

It is one of the first questions homeowners ask us, usually somewhere between deciding to remodel and deciding how much to spend. Do we need to hire a designer before we talk to a contractor? The short answer is no, you do not need one to start, and plenty of the whole-home projects we complete in Briargate and Centennial never involve an outside designer at all. The longer answer is that it depends on what you are trying to solve. Some remodels are a construction problem wearing a design costume, and some are the reverse. Knowing which one you have is what the question is really about.

What design actually covers on a remodel

Design on a whole-home project splits into three pieces that often get lumped together. There is layout, meaning where walls, doors and fixtures go and how rooms connect. There is specification, meaning the cabinets, tile, counters, plumbing fixtures, lighting and hardware that get written into the contract. And there is the visual direction that holds those selections together so a house remodeled room by room still reads as one home.

Layout is inseparable from construction, because what you can move depends on what is holding the house up and where the mechanicals run. Specification and visual direction are where an outside designer most often earns their fee.

What our team handles

Design and layout planning is part of the project. We draw the plan, work through where walls and fixtures can go and write model numbers for the products being installed into the contract, so what you are buying is named before work starts. On a whole-home remodel our first visit is longer and more involved than it would be for a single room, because the through-lines across rooms matter. Flooring that runs from the entry into the kitchen, a trim profile that repeats, a paint palette that works in the north-facing rooms as well as the south-facing ones.

We do not have a degreed designer on staff, and we say so plainly. Our team offers our own design knowledge and experience through the process, and if you would like to bring in an outside designer, we work hand-in-hand with them as well.

When an outside designer is worth it

Three situations tend to justify one. The first is a house where the layout problem is genuinely hard, meaning the rooms are in the wrong relationship to each other and the fix is not obvious from a walkthrough. The second is a homeowner who cannot picture a finished room from samples and wants someone to hold the whole palette. The third is scope large enough that selections become a job of their own, which on a full custom whole-home remodel they usually do.

If none of those describe you, the money is often better spent on the work itself. Bringing in a designer because it seems like the responsible thing to do, without a problem for them to solve, adds a fee and a decision layer without changing the outcome.

Typical 2026 cost ranges

Every remodel is different, and the actual cost for your project depends on the scope, finish level, material selections, structural conditions and the specific home. The ranges below reflect what we typically see for Colorado Springs whole-home remodel projects in 2026. They are meant to help you set expectations for budgeting, not as a quote. We share a fixed-bid number for your specific scope after the consultation. Projects in the Denver suburbs generally price about 15 to 20 percent above these figures.

A cosmetic whole-home refresh, meaning paint, flooring, lighting, refreshed cabinetry, new counters and updated bath vanities with no layout changes in a 2,500 to 3,500 square foot home, typically falls in the $150,000 to $250,000 range for projects of this scope. Specifics for your home will vary.

A mid-range whole-home remodel, with the kitchen and primary bath fully remodeled, secondary baths updated, new flooring and lighting and possibly one or two walls opened, typically falls in the $200,000 to $450,000 range.

A higher-end whole-home remodel, with significant layout changes, a custom kitchen and baths, premium finishes and new mechanicals within the existing footprint, typically falls in the $350,000 to $700,000+ range.

Design and layout planning is included in our scope. An outside designer, if you bring one in, contracts with you directly and prices their own work, so that fee sits outside these ranges.

We don't price by formula or per-square-foot. Every Alpine project is fixed-bid against your specific scope, written down before work starts. The ranges above are for orientation. The number for your project comes from the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a designer before getting a remodeling quote?

No. We can walk the house, work through the layout with you and put a fixed-bid number against a defined scope without a designer involved.

Can I use my own interior designer with your team?

Yes. We work hand-in-hand with outside designers, and it goes best when they are brought in early enough to shape the layout rather than only the finishes.

Who chooses the finishes if there is no designer?

You do, with us. We bring model numbers, samples and the experience of having installed the products, and the selections get written into the contract.
